Cllr Cox looks back at a week of meaningful initiatives and collaboration that showcase the commitment to building a thriving and caring Southend.

Expressing gratitude to our incredible foster carers is really important and so it was great that last Friday, the Mayor was able to extend his heartfelt thanks to those who open their hearts and homes to children in need, at a special event for foster carers. They play a pivotal role in providing stability and care to vulnerable children, and our community is enriched by their dedication. Yet, the demand for foster homes continues to grow, and I urge those with the capacity to consider becoming foster carers.

Talking of homes, the council was also able to showcase another important initiative this week – one that has seen a local house transformed into one of the most sustainable homes in the UK. Through innovative efficiency measures, this project exemplifies our dedication to environmental responsibility.

The house will be open for people to view in the coming months, before a family from the council’s housing waiting list moves in, and we hope that this inspires residents to make eco-conscious choices in their daily lives, contributing to a greener and healthier future for Southend. Email retrofit@southend.gov.uk if you would like a tour.

As the weather gets colder, I was also pleased to see the launch of the winter shelter initiative. The City Council, alongside our dedicated local partner HARP has worked tirelessly to create somewhere to sleep for those rough sleeping during the colder months. This facility not only offers shelter but also provides essential support services to help individuals rebuild their lives. In the spirit of compassion and community, we believe that everyone deserves warmth and security, particularly during the challenging winter season. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers involved.

As we enter December and embrace the holiday spirit, Southend-on-Sea is gearing up for a series of heartwarming Christmas events. From enchanting carol performances to festive favourites, the goal is to create a joyful atmosphere in the city that helps unite the community. I encourage all residents to participate in these festivities and share in the joy of the holiday season.

Have a great weekend and take care.
